BACKGROUND
Shatterbox Concepts is a consultancy that specializes in the power tool, outdoor, and sports industry.
I was lucky enough to be able to work at Shatterbox as an Industrial Design / Design Engineering contract employee in the second half of 2023.
While working there, I was tasked with creating high fidelity ideation sketches of lawn equipment for a client. From sketching, I was then tasked with creating the surface CAD in Solidworks as well.
The work I did with them was specialized in the lawn care industry. Our client was looking to develop a North American line of lawn care equipment.
String Trimmer
The string trimmer was inspired by the existing products the client had on the market, while adding a "tough, modern, and powerful" look they were looking for.
Hard edges and aggressive angles brought the string trimmer to life. It was essential that the visual brand language matched the other lawn care products we were designing. Additionally, we wanted to make sure the VBL extended all the way through the product, even ontp the lower guard.
Hedge Trimmer
The hedge trimmer was also inspired by the existing products the client had on the market, while adding a "tough, modern, and powerful" look they were looking for.
The hedge trimmer was fun in the sense that we made the blade sheath functional as a brush guard as well. Brush guards allow users to make angled cuts with ease and precision.
The battery is placed on the top due to weight distribution with the motor. Both the battery and the motor are significant in weight, and if too far apart, they would create an imbalance that would effect the users ability to trim.
